Help Many Athletes Don’t Know Is Available

Before coming to our office, many patients received poor treatment for their injuries, and many did nothing at all because they didn’t know treatment existed. Dr. Humphries has treated hundreds of patients for sports injuries who originally came in for back or neck pain and only mentioned an arm or leg injury in passing, hoping something could be done. It’s unfortunate that so many people don’t realize there is help for these injuries. If you’ve been living with a nagging injury, we may be able to help.

How Treating Sports Injuries Differs From Other Injuries

In many ways, there isn’t a difference. Tendonitis is tendonitis, and a strained muscle is a strained muscle. The difference in treating sports injuries comes down to emphasis and experience. Our office focuses on the types of injuries seen in athletics, and we have the experience and proven treatment protocols for tendonitis, muscle spasm, sprains, and strains.

Our Combined Treatment Approach

We combine several therapies to treat athletic injuries:

  • Chiropractic adjustments for the spine and extremities
  • Physical therapy, including heat, ice, muscle stimulation, and stretching
  • Sports massage and trigger point therapy
  • Shockwave therapy for chronic tendonitis and shin splints
  • Acupuncture
  • Supports, including taping and braces
  • Lifestyle modifications such as individualized advice, nutrition, home exercises, and ergonomics

Example: Treating Knee Injuries

Knee pain is one of the most common sports injuries we treat. Most knee injuries are not a full-blown “buckling” of the knee that might require surgery, but simpler knee sprains and strains made up of muscle spasm, tendonitis, and swelling. We restore normal function by treating the muscles of the thigh, which attach to the tendons of the knee, along with the knee tendons themselves.

Most people with knee pain don’t realize their thigh muscles are involved, but they are. In fact, thigh muscle spasm is usually the primary problem, and knee tendonitis is secondary. An experienced doctor knows to treat the thigh muscles for knee pain and has effective protocols for treating both the muscle spasm and the tendonitis.

Sports Injury FAQs

Can a chiropractor treat sports injuries?

Yes. We treat sprains, strains, tendonitis, muscle spasm, and joint problems using chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage, shockwave therapy, supports, and home exercises.

Do you only treat professional athletes?

No. We treat high school and college athletes, recreational athletes, and weekend warriors of all ages.

Why does my knee hurt when the injury was in my thigh?

The thigh muscles attach to the tendons around the knee. Spasm in the thigh muscles is often the primary cause of knee pain, with knee tendonitis developing as a result.

Should I use ice or heat on a sports injury?

Ice is usually best for new injuries and swelling, while heat helps relax muscle spasm. We will guide you on what to use and when.

How soon can I return to my sport?

It depends on the injury and how quickly it heals. We will help you return safely and give you exercises to prevent reinjury.

Do you use taping and braces?

Yes. Taping, braces, and other supports can protect injured areas while they heal and help you stay active.

What if my injury needs surgery?

Injuries such as torn ligaments, tendons, or a torn meniscus are referred to the appropriate physician for an orthopedic consult.
